The Burnet High School boys basketball team beat Georgetown Gateway 46-35 Jan. 13 in the District 24-4A opener for both teams.
The Bulldogs seized control from the start, racing to a 14-5 lead after the first quarter, 22-14 at the half, and 31-23 after three periods.
“To get the first one is important,” head coach Roy Kiser said. “It felt good, and we need to win at home. We got on them pretty good. Then we struggled to score, and they did, too.”
He pointed out the Bulldogs turned in their usual game performances. One player, however, went above and beyond — junior guard Jacob Atkinson — who was assigned the Gators’ top player.
“Jacob filled a starting role for us,” the coach said. “We had two starters out. Jacob comes in and does a great job. His defensive efforts were special and hugely important at the end of the game. And he also had 10 points. He’s a gifted shooter. He was pretty efficient in his shots. He made one 3-pointer and shot two of those “
Kiser noted the Gators’ starting point guard didn’t play.
“(When we play them again), I know they’ll be better,” he said.
As for the district race, Kiser said it has plenty of parity among its members. He pointed to Lago Vista’s 58-48 win against Jarrell as proof.
“Honestly, I think all six teams are in the same place,” he said. “Anybody can win on any given night. I think it’s important to win the first one. It’s a 10-game stretch.”
Burnet travels to Jarrell Tuesday, Jan. 17 in a doubleheader with the Lady Dawgs. The boys junior varsity takes the court at 5 p.m. followed by the freshmen at 6:15, and the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
